Taking care of business

Lordy, there is a plethora of Elvis on the internet, the man is not dead, he lives on. You can find him in Poland, Istanbul and Germany.

My favourite Elvis is '68 Comeback Special, we all know he got fat, ate cheese burgers, fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches and crispy chicken, and it may be alarming to some but Elvis also ate squirrels when he was young.

Squirrels aside, one of the Kings favourite things was Christmas, so Merry Christmas to You from Elvis.

Claire Swire

You may have heard about the internet propagation of a certain email exchange between Claire Swire and Bradley Chait. Fantastic example of the potential power of viral marketing on the net. I actually recieved the email myself via tsluts mailing list, and the concensus was that it was probably a fake. Well blow me, if yesterday I didn't get a very nice Christmas card from magicbutton.net signed by everyone including a mystery Claire Swire.

Town & Country

Bowed to the inevitable progression of old age (three-oh is looming big time), and went to see coldplay last night. There was a time when I was always out and about seeing the latest NME cover stars, now I'm turning out to see MOR at its best, rubbing shoulders with stockbrokers, discussing their latest Merril Lynch pay rise - geniuney overhead!. Mind you, thats not to take anything away from the band, I thought they were good and I was impressed overall. I think it was Alan McGhee who dismissed them as ‘music for bedwetters', but I think that just misses the point. They've obviously got talent, imagination, and they make good tunes.

We're doomed

The sword of damacles is swinging above the Internet sector, whytheyfailed.com 'looks at internet business failure, the causes of failure and how best to avoid it', I give it 6 months.

Cowboys

This morning I was taken back to an old TV sitcom, as the builders for the upstairs flat, camped outside my flat. DOH! they'd forgotton their key, 'we're waiting for the boss' they informed me.

Cowboys, these so called builders have amazed me with the destructive powers, thankfully their were waiting, since when they managed to lock themselves out, they hey, kicked the door down. They are putting in a roof patio for the flat above, so drilled through the roof and kept drilling through the ceiling, it rained, rain went through the ceiling, onto the floor, through my ceiling and onto my kitchen floor. I managed to alert the owner before this process was repeated for the flat downstairs.

The theme tune for cowboys was by that old cockney duo chas n dave, went something like 'If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing wrong, With a nail too short, and a screw too long.' I'm sure these guys are humming it as they go about their building business...

The, most popular word

George Kingsley Zipf (1902-1950) discovered that the most popular word in the English language is “the”. Not only that but it is used ten times more than the tenth most popular word, 100 times more than the 100th most popular word and 1,000 times more than the 1,000th most popular word. Zipf's Law can also be used to explain the differing success of some web sites, although I would probably prescribe Sod's Law to Fatskier.

5k

I see that the new 5k site is up. The great thing about the concept of a 5k site is that it caters for the lowest common denominator.

Business & pleasure

Not really a big surprise to read that 28% of British working women say they have had sex in the office. But what that means is that if you look around your office now, every fourth woman has been shagging in the office. With Christmas parties upon us, why not conduct your own inter office survey?

Inner City Life

Not sure how relevant this is to anyone who doesn't know Chatham, but it makes me laugh. I spent several years in and around the medway towns, so its nice to see observational sites like this. The section on baby girls is fantastic. A real study in suburban trends.

Name that tune

Because I say so and its my party and I'll cry if I want, yesterday was the closing date for the name that tune competition. Further entries have included

paul mccartney - the frog song
happy mondays - kinky afro
the commodores - brick house
prince - erotic city
britney spears - Oops!...I did it again
n sync - I´ll never stop

some managed to name that tune in slightly more than one, Lars wrote, 'But then, all of a sudden I knew it! U2 dedicated almost their whole body of work to that picture:'

- Until the end of the world
- Tryin´ to throw your arms around the world
- Acrobat
- Mysterious Ways
- Who´s gonna ride your wild horses
- Discothèque
- Last night on earth
- Freedom for my people
- Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me
- Even better than the real thing
- Some days are better than others
- Dirty Days
- Stuck in a moment you can´t get out of
- Walk on

Nice one, thats got to win.

Christkindlmarkt

Today, I embark on what is rapidly becoming my monthly homage to Germany. I'm flying to Munich to see the outlaws and visit the Christkindlmarkt, and drink the rather attractively named glühwein, a hot mulled wine. I'm assured there is plenty of it, so thats all right by me. Don't know much about the origins of the christmas markets, but the most famous Christkindlmarkt is in Nuremberg, luckily there is no need to feel left out, why no watch it live as it happens.

And to think we moan about Christmas coming earlier each year in England.
